Luminara Headdress Tutorial

 Luminara Headdress Tutorial:

This headdress actually consist of two pieces; the cap and wings of the headdress.

Step 1: Remove Bill from trucker hat and line with fleece

Step 2: Trace and cut out pattern for the "wings" of the headpiece. You should have 2 piece (a back and a front) that fit snugly against the sides and top of your head.

Step 3: Trace the pattern out on cardboard and cut it out. Then test to make sure that it fits your head; it is better if you line the hat with fleece and the embroidery before you start cardboard fitting tests. I didn't do this at first and it was a pain in the ass to fix.

Step 4: Once you have confirmed that the cardboard snugly fits against the side of your head, reinforce each wing with 1-2 more shots of cardboard. Then, cut a pool noodle in half lengthwise and sandwich it in between the cardboard in order to create the curved top of Luminara's headdress. I cut out three separate pieces of noodle-one for the center of the headdress, and one for each wing (that way the top of the headdress is smoother). Once you are satisfied with the placement of each noodles, select a point 2/3rds up each outer noodle and drape some fabric over the side. This will serve as the "drapes" of the headpiece. I couldn't find any photos of the finished headpiece, so here are some photos of my early experimentation.

Step 5: Once you are satisfied with the placement of the drapes, glue them to each outer noodle. After they have dried, you can go ahead and glue each noodle segment to the inside of the rear wing. Do NOT glue the pool noodle to the front wing YET. Do NOT use hot glue-it will burn through the noodles! Stick with E6000 or contact cement.

I also didn't do this the first time and (surprise, surprise) it was also a pain in the ass to fix.

This is an in-progress shot from when I had to redo a section-I think it helps demonstrate the placement of each noodle. I used three smaller pieces that were cut at an angle in order to flow more smoothly.

Step 6: Once the glue dries, you can line the front wing with fleece. I don't have any photos of this step at the moment, but essentially, you want to cut darts into the fleece so that it lays smoothly on the front wing. Any seams can be concealed by gluing the fleece down on the backside of the front wing, which will not be visible to others. The piece of fabric lining the front wing and the "drape" in the back of the headdress are the same, so make sure that you leave a lot of material in the back.

Step 7: After the glue on the front wing dries, you can glue the inside of the wing to the noodle segments.

Step 8: Go ahead and level out the "drapes" so that they are shoulder length and glue on the embroidery/lining.

Hooray! You'e done!
